What were the effects of the Treaty of Tordesillas on the European possessions in the Caribbean?

With that treaty Spain had the land of the Caribbean, but some countries ignored that and started to claim the land, despite Spanish claims to the Caribbean, they still claimed the land, until it reached a point where the Spanish where forced to retreat from the Caribbean.
