Why is most of the carbon dioxide produced by green plants not excreted as metabolic waste (given off because it is not needed)?

I think during the day the sun helps the plants grow with sun light but at night there is no sun help them grow so it takes the plants longer to grow this is what I think! sorry if it is wrong!
