If Antonio did not return the money on the time established he had to repay with "an equal pound of own flesh". He is determined to cut off the piece of flesh that he desires for that was the original deal. He feels deeply offended and this is the only way he sees justice can be delivered. Accordingly, it is pointless to argue with Shylock.
