Why were roman consuls awardeed the power of the veto?

Nobody wanted the one consul to have more power than the other. Please don't be offended, but for example if Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump were presidents together, Hilary could make a lot of laws that Trump didn't like, and he couldn't stop it, so that's why there was power to veto.
