This process is know as Orogenesis. The lithosphere or the outer most portion of the Earth's crust is covered in vast plates, known as tectonic plates. The movement of these plates, in addition to creating earthquakes, caused massive movements in the earth's land masses or lithosphere creating mountain ranges and belts.
