Two intermediates of the sterol biosynthesis pathway, isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate, are used by archaea in the biosynthesis of isoprenoids. Isoprenoids are organic compounds which play widely varying roles in the physiological processes of plants and animals.
