Deforestation alters the carbon in the atmosphere in two primary ways. First, slash and burn techniques used to clear and deforest large amounts of land, release enormous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere through the burning of the entire tree canopy and everything contained within. Second, forest and jungles absorb vast amounts of carbon present in the atmosphere through the absorption and processing of CO2 into oxygen and retaining the carbon as a building block for growth.
