Many depressants reduce small muscle control, making it harder for the eyes to focus and dilate. The two negative effects of this are the inability to see clearly or straight, quite literally the effects. And the other effect is that without the eyes being able to dilate properly, exposure to bright light and or significant changes in light can be painful and possible decrease vision to such a degree, as to be temporarily blind.
