Thomas Paine's Common Sense was important at the beginning of the American Revolution because it helped build a consensus and unify more people against the British. In other words, it helped form a sort of social unification in the American Colonies against the oppressive state of the British. At the time in 1776, it was published anonymously, because any strong declarations for independence was considered treason, for which the punishment was death.
