Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). When the brain of a child is smothered of oxygen supply while in the uterus or during prolonged childbirth, a cascade of reactions results to the death of brain cells hence brain damage. The will child consequently suffer from cerebral palsy.
