The praying mantis has an unusual but surprisingly effective strategy that is used in situations where self-defense is called for. When he feels in danger, he will make himself appear dominant and larger than he normally is by standing tall and spreading his wings and legs out while opening his mouth in a menacing way to hopefully instill fear in his would-be opponent, striking out with his legs and biting if necessary.
