That structure is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is complex protein (also have magnesium ions) that can absorb energy from the light. Chlorophylls are held in organelles-chloroplasts. Overall reaction for photosynthesis is: 6CO₂(carbon-dioxide) + 6H₂O = C₆H₁₂O₆(glucose) + 6O₂(oxygen).
