Usually, it's to search for resources (such as crops, gold, land, etc) and to conquer land for themselves.

The most important reason why industrialized nations embarked on imperial ventures was the fact that these nations wanted to obtain natural resources. This was particularly important as nations developed. Industrial nations required a great deal of natural resources to power their factories and sustain their growth. Therefore, conquering other nations rich in resources became a priority for many of these powers.
