Prove that the sum of the normal strains in perpendicular directions is constant

Strain is a measure of displacement caused by stress, so any displacement in a certain direction must be matched by a proportional displacement in the perpendicular direction. The fact that the strain is normal means that there is no condensing or expanding in response to the applied stress.
