I would explain the importance of Christmas by saying that it is the time to give to people, to be generous because so many people are so needy and they cant even have a proper Christmas either because they are too poor to prepare a feast or they don't even have a home. it also lets people know that life is not hopeless and there is someone who cares about the well being of others, especially if they have lost something or someone they love.
