The belief is that elite woman in Mayan culture were able to heavily influence decisions made at higher levels of power. In addition, there are reported incidents where women ascended to levels of a king, although this information is speculative. What really can tell us about the way the Mayans demonstrated gender roles is through their burial techniques which indicate the influence of women with regards to decisions made by their male counterparts.
