They basically got their first, and exploded opportunities when they could take over places. The Portuguese created footholds in southern India, and took Goa and Malacca (creating a trade empire).

Answer:

During the Age of Exploration, Portuguese were the first to begin the exploration outside Europe in search of new land. Portuguese sailors were able to establish colonies outside of Europe in Asia. Portuguese started establishing their empire when Vasco da Gama took his second voyage to India and defeated the Muslim fleet. Afonso Albuquerque gained control over the Persian Gulf, which helped to established trading center in Goa in 1507 and to captures Malacca in 1511. Goa and Malacca soon turned out to be empires to open trade routes for spices and other luxury items.
