Because eventually Portugal became wealthy and so he went and traveled to India

Many sailors from different parts of the world tried to discover sea route to India. Because in earlier times India very rich in case of jewels and trades.

Bartholomew Dias, in discovering sea route to India, reached Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Following him Vasco Da Gama came to India and reached Calicut port.
