Cattle drives boomed during the late 1800s because of the D) westward expansion of railroads. These cattle drives originated in the cattle ranchers need to move their herds towards the railroads so that cattle could be embarked to the North. The first such great embarkment sent to Chicago was in 1866 from Missouri, so the cattle had to be herded from Texas to Missouri.
