u have a geometric sequence with a common ratio of 3. this means u r multiplying each number by 3 to find the next number.
4 * 3 = 12
12 * 3 = 36
36 * 3 = 108
108 * 3 = 324
324 * 3 = 972
972 * 3 = 2916 <== the next number
