This was the Ashcan school. This movement, even though it wasn't organized as such, felt that it was imperative that the artists tell uncomfortable truths about city life and its inhabitants through their paintings. This was in contrast to the more genteel style that many previous movements were known for taking as a way of sanitizing their subjects.
