Homeostasis is the ability of an organism to adjust its internal environment to maintain a stable equilibrium. Homeostasis requires balances between many factors in the body such as the body temperature. Other factors include; fluid balance, blood sugar level, pH of extracellular fluid and the concentrations of sodium, potassium and calcium ions. These factors must be kept within specific pre-set limits in order to maintain the body's overall function.
