The regional differences contributed greatly to the disputes between states rights and federal power. Southern states needed slavery because their cotton king economy depended on it. For the North slavery was unnecessary and for many Americans it was highly immoral. Therefore the Federal government wanted to continue to suppress Southern states rights of owning slaves and Southern states were worried that their rights were taken away.
