The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, was the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War. The treaty also settled the territorial disputes between the United States and Mexico. The two major features of the treaty were:

  1. 525,000 square miles were taken away from Mexico by the United States, including parts of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
  2. Mexico gave up all claims to Texas, recognizing the Rio Grande as their northern border.
