A Major Difference between japanese samurai and european knights during the middle ages is that only knights:

A provided military protection for the ruling class
B wore protective armor and carries swords
C recieved land in payment for their service
followed a distinct code of honor

the answer I think is that they received land as payment because the daimyo's didn't have to pay taxes and had a private army of samurais that attacked other daimyos to gain extra land that's why there were many different more powerful families.

"C recieved land in payment for their service" would be the correct answer. The Samurai did not work for land, however the Knights did.
