How did the emergence of consumer society affect democracy in the United States? Did the nation become more or less democratic during the 1950s?

Consumer society pretty much benefited the representatives that provide the best regulations to maintain the relationship between producer and middle class people and create more distinction between lower class, middle class, and upper class.
Since 1950, i might say people become less democratic because a certain economic policy that chosen by the government would benefit a certain group of people while sacrificing the others.
