Because the triangles are congruent, corresponding sides are equal.
Thus, x=y+1 and 3y=x+3. Subst. y+1 for x in the 2nd equation:
3y = (y+1) + 3. Then 3y = y + 1 + 3, or 2y = 4, or y = 2.
Since x = y + 1, x = (2) + 1 = 3 (answer)
