Hemolytic jaundice occurs when red blood cells are rapidly broken down (hemolytic anemia) resulting in a flood of bilirubin in the blood stream. While destruction of old red blood cells are a normal process, in hemolytic jaundice, the RBC’s are prematurely destroyed.
