1 quart is equal to 0.25 gallons. using cross multiplication, 8 quarts of water would then be 2 gallons. if 1 gallon of water is 8 1/3 pounds, then 2 gallons of water (again using cross multiplication) would be about 16.7 pounds of water, if you round. So the hiker is carrying approximately 16 pounds of water.
