Both men were transcendentalist thinkers who both openly discussed how individualism was important and what changes society should make in order to become more individual. They both attacked major religions in the country, the mainstream cultural values of the people, and the political ideals that seemed to create a sheep type of thought among the people. Instead, both men promoted a more individualized way of thinking and the idea that every person can and should have different views on things.
