Why does Odysseus encourage his men when they encounter Charybdis but does not when they encounter Scylla

Odysseus chooses to sail toward Scylla rather than Charybdis because Charybdis would sink the whole ship and kill everyone. ... Odysseus sailed away from Thrinacia, only to have his boat destroyed by Zeus.
