By 1500, inter-island exchanges in Pacific Polynesia had suffered major decline. This may be due partly to the ecological devastation that hit the area; some specialists posit that a freezing and inconsistent climate change known as Little Ice Age made the weather conditions less favorable for inter-island exchange.
