When a person hyperventilates, they begin to breathe very fast. Hyperventilation upsets the balance between the normal oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the body because when someone hyperventilates, they are inhaling more air than they are exhaling. Hyperventilation usually occurs when someone experiences panic attacks or other kinds of emotional distress.
