The cell size affects the rate of diffusion in and out of the cells. If the cell is larger, then there will be less movement of materials occurring within the cell. If it's smaller, then there will be more movement. This is why smaller cell sizes are optimal for animals while it is acceptable for plant cells to have rather larger ones.
