A phlebotomist should not draw from the vein on the underside of the wrist. This is because there is a risk of hitting the nerves that course through the wrist – namely, radial nerve and ulnar nerve. Hitting any of these nerves can cause temporary or permanent nerve damage, which would render the patient unable to open and close their hand.
