Winter ice floats on the top of a lake because it is less dense than the water.

Substances that are less dense than liquid water will float, so if ice is less dense than liquid water it will float.

Normally when substances become solids they become denser, but the phenomenon of water actually becomes less dense when it becomes a solid is due to hydrogen bonding.
