As per the federal regulations, research has the eligibility for exemption if it falls into one of the six categories of research activity as described in the regulations. Three of the most frequently used by social and behavioral scientists are: research conducted in established or commonly accepted educational settings, research that involves, survey and interview procedures or observations of public behavior, and research involving the collection of existing data.
