Why were Europeans attempting to find a sea route to Asia? Also what obstacles did they face when going by land?

Europeans mainly wanted a sea route to Asia for trade. Their difficulties include a very limited understanding of the Americas (they didn’t even know such place existed) and Far East, and they did not know the cure for scurvy
