They were interested in all cultures of the world and wanted to amass large quantities of data and scholarly books that could be translated to Arabic. It wasn't only Greek and Roman but from all over the world and it proved to be successful because the Arabs developed numerous things without which we couldn't live today. Most common example being the Arabic numerals.
