Why is Santiago de Compostela so important in the Christian world?

According to tradition, St. James the Apostle came to Spain and brought Christianity to the Iberian peninsula. To commemorate that fact, the Spanish built a great shrine to honor the apostle, which has been a place of pilgrimage ever since.
