The Roman Empire was massive and, as is the case with many overextended empires, it was finding it difficult to properly manage and protect the enormous and diverse territories included. The split of the Roman Empire into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire was an attempt to make it easier to manage.
