A group of scientists is studying the fossils of three different hominids. They find that the DNA of the first hominid is more similar to that of the second hominid than to that of the third hominid. Based on this observation, what scientific inference can the scientists make about these hominids?

Answer & Explanation:

Fossils are an important source of information, however, it's been demonstrated that it's not enough to establish strong or definitive relations between the species. Anyway, as the DNA shows a strong relation between 1 and 2, it could lead to the possibility that these two species are more strongly related to each other. It's impossible to establish which one is more ancient but the 3 is not so closely related and could be a different branch from a phylogenetic tree, for example.
