Henry Clay’s American System proposed that there should be three reinforcing parts, namely: a tariff to protect and promote the American industry; internal subsidies that would help in the construction for roads, canals, and other improvements for agriculture; a national bank for commerce. One example would be that residents in Pittsburgh can sell iron with those who live in the East, in place that the iron is imported from Britain.
