Daniel works hard this semester because he needs to pass all the courses to graduate in time. If he does not finish his degree this semester, his employer will probably lay him off and find someone else to do his job. This is one example of extrinsic motivation.
Extrinsic motivation refers to behavior that is driven by external rewards such as money, fame, grades, and praise. This type of motivation arises from outside the individual, as opposed to intrinsic motivation, which originates inside of the individual.
