During the 1920s, how did credit card debt play a role in causing the Great Depression?

In the 1920's, many people would purchase things using credit, not having any thought as to how they would pay their debts. When the great depression began, people were unprepared since they already had a lot of debt. Thus, they could not pay back what they owed, causing many businesses to collapse.
