Admission to public concerts was D. fairly expensive.
This meant that the 'hoi polloi, ' or peasants, ordinary people, couldn't afford to attend such concerts and become more educated. This was reserved only for people who had enough money to spend on concerts, which is why these concerts were quite elitist.
