The most important events or ideas in a poem can be found by analyzing the meter to determine how rhythm affects meaning. The meter is a unit of rhythm in poetry, the pattern of the beats. Each meter has a certain number of syllables in it, usually two or three syllables. The difference in types of meter is which syllables are accented and which deaccented. Meter can be also be called foot.
