The right answer is D) cell walls.

The presence of a layer of inert and rigid substance around each of their cells is characteristic of plants.

A cell wall contains a cell membrane. The cell wall is a fairly strong resistant layer because of osmotic forces and their growth. They are located outside the plasma membrane in plant cells, fungi, algae, bacteria and archaea.
