The Milky Way's name stems from the Greeks, who refers to the galaxy as galaxias kyklos or milky circle. The Romans, who called it via lacteal, or "The road of milk" altered the term from its original Greek origins.

When seen at night, it is described as a "milky spot in the sky".
This term was coined by Ancient Romans.
