Why do the others treat Eliezer like an orphan for a short time?

Eliezer's father had his name written down during one of the selections. He now has to undergo a second selection. The others know that very few people return from this second selection so they believe that Eliezer's father will be killed. The others know that Eliezer's father is one of the reasons that Eliezer continues to fight for his life, so they feel sorry for him.
